Four O'Clock plants, scientifically known as Mirabilis jalapa, is a bushy, blooming perennial from the Nyctaginaceae family. It is native to parts of South America but is now naturalized in various regions worldwide. The name comes from the plant's unique characteristic of opening its tubular flowers in the late afternoon or early evening, and closing in the morning. These plants produce slightly pointed oval leaves on branching stems. The approximately 2-inch-long blooms are trumpet-shaped with five petals, and can come in several colors -- often shades of pink and red. Some produce flowers in multiple colors, sometimes with marbling or other markings. This is a fast-growing plant that often sprawls in the garden. It’s best planted in the spring.
